Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel leaves Ferrari at the end of the year. Scuderia confirmed on Tuesday. Previously, the “Bild” had already reported Tuesday night about the German driver saying goodbye to the Italian racing team.

Heppenheim, 32, will not renew his contract with Scuderia and will leave the Italians after six years. Both sides were unable to agree to a new contract, Ferrari said.

“The team and I noted that there was no longer a common desire to stay together by the end of this season,” Vettel is quoted in a press release. His departure was the best decision for both parties, emphasized team boss Mattia Binotto.

Vettel pursues Ferrari’s dream (so far) to no avail

Until now, Vettel has been chasing his dream of becoming Michael Schumacher with the Ferrari Formula 1 world champion to no avail. In the previous season, Vettel held a disappointing fifth place in the World Cup and again had to beat the powerful Mercedes.

His promising job rival, Charles Leclerc, also landed in front of him. Monegasse, 22, signed a working document that was valid until the end of 2024 before Christmas 2019.

Leclerc is the team’s great hope for the future. Vettel was allegedly recently offered a contract for another year.

Vettel: everyone should feel comfortable

Vettel had recently said in a video conference that there was no deadline for an extension. “Whatever the deal, the team and I will have to get comfortable with it,” said the German.

Since coming to Ferrari for the 2015 season, Vettel has been unable to build on successes with Red Bull: He had won his four world titles between 2010 and 2013 with the then almost invincible Red Bull racing team.

This year Vettel was not on the track at all. Due to the crown crisis, all planned races have been postponed or canceled. The start of the Formula 1 season is scheduled for July 5 in Austria. (msc / dpa)
