Marco Odermatt won the giant slalom for the first time since 2011. After the race, the 23-year-old is visibly relieved.
In the finish area, still visibly excited, the winner Odermatt gives the “FIS” an interview in English for television stations around the world. And if you not only listen, but also look very closely, you may even believe that you can see that the Swiss may have suppressed a tear or two shortly before.
I don’t even know where to start. Three races this season, three podiums. First victory in men’s giant slalom, first victory in men’s giant slalom since Carlo Janka in 2011. What are you particularly proud of today?
I really can’t say. It is very emotional for me. Today was a lot of pressure. The first time with the red starting number, the first time after the first race in the lead … Now I am really proud.
I can see the emotions in your eyes. If you want a little more pressure: now you lead the general of the World Cup together with Alexis Pinturault. Now you are preparing better for the next race.
Clear. They too. (smile)
What was going through your head before the second race at the start?
To be honest, he was pretty relaxed. I was just trying to focus on getting my best performance possible. It really wasn’t easy due to the lighting. And I had to push myself, especially in the last section.
Odermatt: “We have a great team and we push ourselves”
A few minutes later, Odermatt also gave a short interview to his fellow “SRF” members (video below). He repeats that it was emotional after crossing the finish line, but “now it has calmed down a bit, there is not so much and almost no one. But it was really great today. “He is asked again how he felt in the beginning before the second race, the answer is still more or less the same as before, that is, it did not make a big difference for him.” And he knew it was tight behind me, I had to drive like always. Clean, but on the edge. And I think that was today’s recipe. “
Interestingly, Odermatt, when asked about the first Swiss victory in a men’s giant slalom in ten years, also focused on the team’s performance. «Loîc (Meillard) and Gino (Caviezel) were also very close. We have a great team together and we push each other. It can go on like this, ”says Odermatt. The now overall leader in the World Cup doesn’t have much time to celebrate, the next races are on the program in just a few days.
