Obwalden closes restaurants for Christmas, and there are no sales on Sundays for shops

(play) Obwalden’s governing council decided to revoke special permits regarding restaurant and shop opening hours on December 25. Restaurants have to close completely, stores cannot sell on Sundays. In the notification, the reason is: “Due to the heavy burden borne by hospitals in central Switzerland and healthcare workers, the requirements for special permits are no longer met.”
The epidemiological situation in the canton has been reassessed. This decision should provide the operators of the affected companies with a certain degree of planning security. Health Director Maya Büchi-Kaiser explains: “The governing council values the efforts of all the companies that have developed and adhered to good protection concepts in recent weeks and months. The governing council regrets that many companies have to close anyway. “
With its decision, the governing council pursues the goal of reducing the number of infections and the burden on medical care as soon as possible. Maya Büchi-Kaiser is already looking to the future and says: “This will create the conditions for the renewed application of the exemption clauses. We want to allow more freedom for citizens and business activities of companies as quickly as possible. “
Capabilities are exhausted
The number of cases and the reproductive value, which is decisive for the assessment, remain low in Obwalden canton compared to the other cantons. “However, the capacities in the inpatient healthcare facilities in the canton, as well as in the other healthcare facilities in the region, on which the Obwalden population depends to ensure basic care, are exhausted.”
Due to the fact that capacities in the health sector are no longer fully guaranteed, the canton of Obwalden no longer meets the requirements set by the federal government for exemptions. “With the revocation of the exemption permits, we want to avoid greater pressure on the health system. Health care for the population has priority, ”says Maya Büchi-Kaiser.
The Cantonal Hospital of Lucerne, which is of great importance as a central hospital for the entire region, is particularly busy. According to the notification, the occupancy rate in the intensive care unit is currently 95 percent.
