Lucerne hotels are reserved, more than 4,000 soldiers have postponed their military service. But it looks bad for the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Central Switzerland.
WEF Green Klaus Martin Schwab (82) is currently in Singapore. In a telephone conversation with SVP National Councilor Franz Grüter (57), Schwab confirmed that there is currently great international pressure not to hold the WEF in Switzerland.
Alternative Bürgenstock
It could well be that the Southeast Asian city-state is hosting the forum. Schwab emphasizes, however, that this would not be a general exit from Switzerland, but that the current situation of the crown in our country would change previous plans.
In reality, it was planned that due to the corona pandemic, the conference would not take place in Davos in January as usual, but in a smaller form in May at the luxury hotel Bürgenstock in the canton of Nidwalden. This has already led to numerous hotel reservations in nearby Lucerne.
Due to the high number of infections in Switzerland, many managers of international companies no longer want to travel here.

Central Switzerland asks the Federal Council for help
Politicians are alarmed. Many commoners address the Minister of the Economy, Guy Parmelin (61), in an open letter. The implementation of the WEF 2021 in Nidwalden and Lucerne is “especially at this crucial time to secure hundreds of jobs,” it says in the letter. It is signed by the president of the FDP, Petra Gössi (44), the leader of the CVP parliamentary group Andrea Gmür (56) and the national councilor SVP Grüter, as well as other parliamentarians from central Switzerland.
The WEF reported that it had taken note of the letter to Parmelin. However, the health of the participants, staff, and host population had an absolute priority. “Unfortunately, the situation in Europe in general is very complicated and difficult, which leads us to consider other regions for a physical encounter,” he says.
The WEF board is expected to determine the location on Monday.
