During the height of the Corona crisis in the spring, the Swiss did their best on their bikes and dealers of two-wheelers bought their shop windows and warehouses. Many of them were unable to give birth for weeks. Bread and butter bikes and high-priced electric bikes were particularly popular.
In the meantime, the situation has eased a bit and at the same time has changed. Because now the parts are running out. The bicycle boom as a result of the Corona crisis is leading behind the scenes to a global distribution battle for bicycle parts, as SRF reports.
“200 percent more parts sold”
Bruno Herrmann from the Bikeimport.ch online store has 16,000 components in its range. “From one day to the next, we sold 200 percent more wear parts,” he told SRF. The reason: Many people also repaired their old bikes during the Corona crisis, and not just in Switzerland. As a result, some components such as brake pads or discs were temporarily sold throughout Europe.
Parts factories in Taiwan and Japan were completely idle for weeks due to the Corona crisis. The main suppliers produce in these countries. The result: some parts were not available at all, not enough or not available at the desired time.
Hungary Electric Bicycle Motors
The advantage: Companies that have part of their production located in Europe before Corona. For example Bosch. The company manufactures motors for electric bicycles in Hungary. In the industry, however, we know that the boom will not last forever. Therefore, production capacities will be expanded only modestly. This has consequences for the Gümmeler: he will have to wait for delays in the future. (pbe)
