The world’s number one Novak Djokovic has spoken out in favor of the abolition of linesmen in tennis. The technology is now so advanced that a video surveillance system can be relied upon, says the Serb in Paris at the French Open.
“With all due respect for the tradition and culture of our sport, when it comes to the people on the field, including the linesmen, I see no reason why not every tournament in the world uses a system like the one that we did in Cincinnati. York took advantage of the postponed tournament, ”explains Djokovic.
There were no linesmen there, but video surveillance of the lines on the center court. Although this would lead to additional costs, the development towards technical support could not be stopped anyway. “Players, of course, but linesmen, I don’t remember why,” says the 33-year-old.

Should line judges be abolished?
Djokovic was disqualified at the US Open in New York because he had knocked down a linesman with a tennis ball in frustration. Apparently, that’s also a reason why he speaks for the abolition of linesmen. “Then the risk would not be so great that I would do what happened to me in New York,” says Djokovic with a smile.
The 17-time Grand Slam winner is by no means an isolated case with his demand for technological support for referees. The call to the hawk’s eye is growing among many tennis players, also due to several wrong decisions at the French Open.
