Liqui Moly Intact Moto2 riders Tom Lüthi and Marcel Schrötter were unable to turn their practice performance into a good qualifying result at the Circuit de la Comunitat Valencia Ricardo Tormo.
A difficult season lies behind the Liqui Moly Intact GP team of Jürgen Lingg. Tom Lüthi and Marcel Schrötter’s qualifying at the European GP in Valencia didn’t go well either. After both drivers made it straight to Q2, a strategy error cost them a chance of a good starting position. Lüthi reached 13th place, Schrötter did not go beyond 16th place.
Both drivers decided to start qualifying on wet tires, but the track became increasingly dry, so many drivers switched to slicks after a few minutes. The Intact team overlooked this point, which was particularly upsetting for Lüthi: “At first we went out on the track on wet tires, which in retrospect was a wrong decision. I was sure the conditions were similar to the morning training, but the asphalt was drying faster than expected. When I switched to slicks, I had very few laps to get used to the conditions. I always need some time to build a rhythm, this strategy has set me back. ”
After his performance in practice and first place in FP1 on Friday, the Swiss was optimistic about the race: “You are always smarter afterwards, but nothing is lost in the race.”
His teammate Marcel Schrötter switched to slicks seven minutes before the end and was only able to complete two laps with them, very little to set a fast time. “I felt very comfortable on the wet tires in practice, but there wasn’t enough time in qualifying to get used to the difficult track conditions with the slicks. If you deviate just one millimeter from the ideal line in these conditions, the entire lap is destroyed because you have to go very far and cut off the gas at the wet points, ”complained the Bavarian.
However, he does not lose hope and has his sights firmly set on his goal for Sunday’s race: “I wanted to step up to the top 10 in qualifying, but I’m not giving up. I will fight in the race to achieve my goal. “
