There aren’t two on the right, two on the left, and it just doesn’t drop a point: on the contrary, knitting is increasingly towards art, and mostly male knitting designers are creating increasingly wild patterns . The dated was yesterday, even dustier, says Hannover textile designer Anne-Susanne Gueler.
Knit to relax
A few years ago, people learned about weaving using simple techniques, Gueler says. At the time, however, from his point of view, there was little really good wool. That has changed. And: people noticed that they could create something of their own even with limited resources. Just turn off everything else: Ute Frederich emphasizes the special flow of weaving, who for a long time ran a boutique in Paderborn, and also organizes weaving trips to Sylt and Berchtesgaden.
Because there are people who weave to relax, they don’t think about anything and find an inner flow, explains the 59-year-old man. Others felt more confident with the complete carefree package, complete with yarn, needles, instructions, and best of all, a YouTube video tutorial. But there is also fabric that extends to art, she emphasizes as well. Knitting has risen again since 2008, but that doesn’t make the wool business easier, as many people shop online. And now it has such a strong demand for weaving trips that it can no longer satisfy them.
Industry notices growth
Does the industry notice it too? There is definitely a significant increase, says a spokeswoman for Initiative Handarbeit, an association in which the main suppliers to the cottage industry from Germany, Austria and Switzerland have joined. There is no market data for the current year yet, but 2020 is a banner year for vendors and sales have increased tremendously. The association also notes this in accessing its own website with instructions and patterns: very strong at the first crown lock in the spring, then declining and significantly stronger again since October.
Corona makes people weave
So does the pandemic also play a role? Of course, says the spokeswoman. Because: People are more at home, they also invest in their home and pursue hobbies for which they had little time for a long time. In addition, there is the desire to do something by hand, a return to artisan values. Trend researcher Peter Wippermann confirms: At the moment of confinement, when people seek a meditative occupation, knitting is ideal.
Knitting is increasingly digital
And to take a little break, says Gueler. As early as the 1970s and 1980s, this may have led to almost everyone knitting, if old photos can be used. Ultimately, however, knitting is also going digital to some extent – everyone still has to take care of the pure manual work on their own, but the instructions are not only downloaded from specially created platforms, creative knitting artists also upload your own designs for others. Hats and scarves are currently in high demand and in fashion, but so are self-woven scarves, says Gueler. While knitting gatherings would have to be canceled in the pandemic, keep in touch via messaging services and wait for normal life to start again. In his opinion, the weaving trend is not suffering from the Crown crisis. On the contrary.
And something else could have turned out to be important for the fabric trend: The quality of the material plays an increasingly important role, that’s also a trend, says the textile designer. As is the willingness to spend a little more money on good material.
