Nokia builds a cellular network on the moon
Nokia has been chosen by the US space agency NASA to install a cellular network on the Moon. A permanent settlement will be built there by the end of the decade.
For the first time, an LTE / 4G communication system will be installed in space, Finnish telecommunications company Nokia announced. This should help pave the way for a permanent human presence on the lunar surface. The goal is to get the network up and running by the end of 2022. They work with the US space company Intuitive Machines. NASA estimates the cost of the project at $ 14.1 million.
Transmission masts were developed especially for the moon, as they would have to withstand extreme temperatures and higher radiation levels there than on Earth. As on Earth, Nokia plans to expand to the new 5G cellular standard on the Moon at a later date.
The settlement of the moon is just the beginning
As part of the “Artemis” program, NASA wants to send astronauts to the moon again by 2024, including the first woman. A permanent settlement will be built there by the end of the decade to investigate the Earth satellite more intensively than before.
With the Nokia network, communication options with high and reliable transmission speeds must be created so that, for example, lunar vehicles can be controlled remotely and high-resolution video can be transmitted. Also, it should be possible to navigate in real time. These things are crucial for people to be present on the moon in the long term, according to Nokia. For NASA, all of this should provide information for the next big step: sending astronauts to Mars.
