Former US President Donald Trump fueled the dispute over his party’s leadership with a tirade against top Republican Mitch McConnell.
In a statement, Trump made it clear without a doubt that in the future he would view Republicans as black if they clung to McConnell as a leading figure in the party. “The Republican Party can never be respected or strong again with political” leaders “like Senator Mitch McConnell at the top,” Trump said Tuesday (local time). “If the Republican senators hang on to it, they won’t win again. McConnell has been the Republican Majority Leader in the Senate and one of Trump’s most powerful allies in recent years. Trump attested to McConnell, who has been in the Senate for 36 years, a lack of political understanding and lacks wisdom, skill and personality. He rebuked McConnell as “short-tempered” and “politically worthless” and threatened to back internal rivals in McConnell’s party. According to the New York Times, an original version of the ad should have been even more drastic. Trump also had the idea of holding a press conference.
McConnell blames Trump
Trump’s written account of McConnell comes a few days after the end of the second impeachment process in the United States Senate that Democrats launched after Trump supporters attacked the Capitol. They wanted to hold the former president responsible for “inciting a riot” and hoped that if found guilty, he would be suspended from office. That would have made it impossible for Trump to run in the 2024 presidential election, which is always speculated on.
McConnell is among the vast majority of Republican senators who voted against a Trump conviction on Saturday. The trial ended with acquittal. McConnell and several colleagues in the party considered the process unconstitutional because it was directed against a former president. McConnell recently blamed Trump for the attack on Congress. On Saturday he said Trump was “practically and morally” responsible for it. In an article for the “Wall Street Journal” he stated this on Monday.
Democrat sues Trump
After the acquittal, McConnell asked that Trump appear in court for the attack on the Capitol. “We have a criminal justice system in this country, we have civil lawsuits and past presidents are not immune from any of them,” he said.
This ruling was cited in a communication about a lawsuit that the Democratic congressman Bennie Thompson from the US state of Mississippi filed Tuesday against Trump and others in a court in the capital Washington. Trump supporters forcibly stormed the Capitol on January 6 as Congress met there to certify the outcome of the presidential election. Trump had incited his supporters at a rally shortly before with the repeatedly refuted claim that his election victory had been stolen.
