The post office requires owners to move the mailbox if it is too far from the street, on their own.
Anyone living in an old house knows the phenomenon first hand because relics of the Post’s history are often still visible: once the letters were distributed directly through a slot through the front door, then it was added a first mailbox right next to the entrance and only then were the mailboxes moved to the street.
Since 2012, the post office has been able to require that mailboxes be moved to the property line. Much to the chagrin of the affected homeowners. But that should end now.
SVP National Councilor Franz Ruppen demands that such an obligation only apply to new buildings. So everyone else would be grandfathered and could leave the mailbox where it is. According to Ruppen, the Swiss Post lost a lot of sympathy and goodwill with consistent implementation.

Through a motion he made in the spring session that ended last week, Ruppen now wants to stop the transfers. «Those affected have contacted me. Regarding them, Swiss Post said unequivocally: if the mailboxes are not moved, the mail will no longer be delivered and will be deposited in a PO box, ”says Ruppen. However, he himself is not affected by this regulation.
It’s not that first timethat troops or other parliamentarians advocate that mailboxes be allowed to remain there, where are you today. However, so far these attempts have been unsuccessful.
Swiss Post is all about efficiency. If postal women no longer have to walk that far to mailboxes, delivery is faster. “The Post wants to offer its customers safe, reliable and fast delivery of all mail,” said a spokeswoman. If, from Swiss Post’s point of view, a change in the mailbox location is necessary, it will seek a conversation with the customer. “The goal is to find a solution that is satisfactory for both parties.”
In fact, there are always conflicts on these issues. Ultimately, it can even go so far that the post office no longer delivers the mail home. In the period between 2013 and 2019 there were around 170 cases in which the responsible Postcom had to arbitrate. There are currently two pending cases at Postcom. The climax of the conflicts that landed on the Commission was in 2017. Since then, the number of cases has been decreasing.
