The title dream is over!
Bernese racing driver Nico Müller (28) cannot turn things around in the final DTM weekend at Hockenheim. Although Müller won Saturday’s race, the setback followed Sunday morning in qualifying for the final race of the season.
Müller’s title challenger René Rast (34) scores three extra points for pole position, while the Swiss Audi driver scores nothing. Before the last race it is 328: 312; even if Rast is eliminated, Müller has to finish second.
But the German cannot be beaten in the race either, even if Müller takes the lead after the pit stops. Rast grabs the Bernese Oberlander again: the last round of the DTM ends as the 2020 championship and the 2019 table already: Rast before Müller.
Müller’s silent disappointment
His six wins this season are not enough for the Bernese against touring car star Rast. After the second runner-up in a row, Müller says on television: “Emotions are hard to describe. We knew that today would be difficult. But he only believes in it and only realizes at the finish line that the fight is over. It is difficult to digest, but René deserves it. I can still get a lot of positives out of this season. “
With Fabio Scherer (21), the second Swiss on the field finished his rookie season in 12th place.
After the ghost race at Hockenheim, the 600 horsepower monsters are sent to the museum. After leaving Mercedes in 2018 and Aston Martin in 2019, the DTM could not survive with only Audi and BMW at the start, next year the DTM will attempt a fresh start with new regulations. It is not yet clear if Müller will be there again.
