News about the crown virus: Does a vitamin D deficiency increase the risk of death in the crown?

Still is Corona virus-Pandemic did not survive. So far more than 3.5 million cases have been registered, more than 247,000 people have died (as of May 4, 2020). Until now, there is no reliable medicine or vaccine to protect against the virus. Now scientists seem to have a connection between Vitamin D. and discovered the death rate of Covid 19. People with a low vitamin D level are more likely to receive Covid-19 and die from it. Can vitamin D supplementation protect against corona infection?

Current Coronavirus Study: Does Vitamin D Protect Against Covid-19?

The study originated from scientists at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation Trust and the University of East Anglia and was provisionally published on the prepress website Research Plaza published. The researchers compared the average level of vitamin D in 20 European countries with the infection and mortality rate of Covid 19. They found evidence that vitamin D deficiency increases the probability that a patient will die of a coronavirus infection. The study showed a correlation between countries with low vitamin D levels and countries with the highest mortality and the highest number of Covid 19 cases. “We believe we can recommend vitamin D supplements to protect against SARS-CoV-2 infections.” said the study.

Study shows: Vitamin D deficiency correlates with crown mortality

Vitamin D levels are worryingly low, especially in older people. Exactly this population group also has an increased risk of death from a coronavirus infection. According to the German Nutrition Society (DGE) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM), a serum value of more than 50 nmol / l is considered sufficient. However, if the amount of vitamin D is less than 30 nmol / l, there is a deficiency.

The study shows an average vitamin D level of 26 nmol / l in Spain, 28 nmol / l in Italy and 45 nmol / l in the Nordic countries in the elderly. “These are countries with a high number of Covid-19 cases. Older people are the group with the highest risk of morbidity and mortality in SARS-CoV-2,” the study continues. “The most vulnerable population group is also the one with the highest vitamin D deficiency,” the researchers concluded in their preliminary report.

Vitamin D is absorbed by the human body through its diet (for example, mushrooms, fish, liver, butter, milk, eggs, oats). However, it is also produced by skin cells through sun exposure. Vitamin D plays an important role in regulating calcium balance and maturing immune cells.

Can vitamin D supplementation protect against coronavirus?

It is questionable whether vitamin D supplementation can protect against the coronavirus. The study results have not yet been examined and verified by other scientists. However, the study by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation Trust and the University of East Anglia is not the only one to look at the effects of vitamin D on the coronavirus.

For example, a study by Trinity College Dublin recently found that the number of respiratory infections decreased by 50 percent in adults taking vitamin D supplements. Another study suggests that vitamin D may improve chances of recovery after a crown infection. Before adding vitamin D to your body, you must first test with a doctor. Too much vitamin D can also have side effects.
