New traffic rules: this applies to Swiss roads from today

A bus if a rescue lane is not formed, passing on the right, 17-year-olds at the wheel: Today, many new traffic regulations apply. The summary.

At the end of the year, changes in the traffic law also take effect. The main changes are as follows:

The principle of the zipper becomes mandatory

All drivers know the following scenario: when breaking lanes or entering the highway, you turn on the indicator to enter, and wait, wait and wait. This should end in January. Because the so-called zipper principle is becoming mandatory. From then on, drivers drive until the lane is dismantled and then make their way to the next lane. There, the other vehicles have to let the drivers enter from the eliminated lane. However, inward turning vehicles should not force the gap. The aggressive horn isn’t very useful either.

Rescue alley on the way

On motorways, an emergency lane must be cleared for emergency vehicles even at speed, even if no blue light vehicle can be seen or heard. In the case of two-lane highways, the emergency lane must be formed between the two lanes; for three-lane highways, between the far left and the center lane. Anyone who doesn’t follow the rule is threatened with a fine.

Driving on the highways

If a column forms in the left lane or in the center lane in the case of three-lane streets, it is possible to pass again. But not at full speed, but with the “necessary caution”, as it is called. And for the information of all smart guys: overtaking on the right and turning left is prohibited and punishable by a 250 franc fine.

In 2021, right-hand traffic will be allowed on motorways in certain situations.

100 km / h maximum for light tugger trains on motorways

In the future, passenger cars or delivery vans with trailers will not be able to travel faster than 100 kilometers per hour on motorways. However, the trailer must not weigh more than 3.5 tonnes and must be suitable for this speed. The same applies to the towing vehicle and the tires. Before motorists with their kids, cones, and trailers head out on their camping vacation, the Astra recommends clearing up questions about maximum speed and weight.

Alcoholic beverages can be re-served at motorway service stations

Alcoholic beverages can be resold and served at highway service stations. The Federal Council has lifted the corresponding prohibition in the National Highway Ordinance.

Turn right on Rot for Velo and Moped

Cyclists and mopeds can now turn right on red, as long as there is a sign with a yellow bicycle and an arrow at the traffic lights. Pedestrians have right of way. If there are no signs at the traffic lights, turning right is still prohibited. One bad consolation: small changes for cyclists who constantly ignore traffic lights.

School children with bicycles on the sidewalk

Children 12 and under can now ride their bikes on the sidewalk. With this, the federal government wants to promote cycling even among unsafe children. Anyone who is afraid of massive collisions on the sidewalk: The rule only applies if there is no bike lane or bike lane. Also, pedestrians still have right of way. Everything is basically the same, but now it’s officially allowed.

Velostrassen at Tempo-30-Zonen

Bike lanes can now be set in 30 km / h zones, where vehicles have precedence over the roads leading to them. The right of way previously applicable in 30 km / h zones is no longer applicable on these cycle routes. Consequently, “Stop” or “No right of way” is indicated on the roads leading into it. Experience shows that cyclists who ignore traffic lights do not care much about the right of way. That’s why the following also applies here – it will change little for them.

Padlock for cyclists

In the future, city authorities will be able to mark cyclist locks on the road in front of light signals, even if there is no bike lane. This allows cyclists to stand in front of other road users and thus make themselves more visible. The risk of an accident when driving again is lower. To avoid dangerous situations, the TCS reminds you that such markings are only allowed if traffic safety is guaranteed and local conditions permit.

New charging station icon

This symbol indicates new parking stations for electric vehicles. In the future, parking spaces with charging stations can also be colored green to make them more visible.

Learning units from 17 years old

Anyone who acquires a learning license for automobiles before the age of 20 must go through a new phase of learning of twelve months. In order for future motorists to still be able to take their driving test at the age of 18, the learner’s license may be issued in the future to 17-year-olds.

No more direct entry into the most powerful motorcycle category

As with the compulsory rack principle, this change also belongs to the “could have come before” category: anyone who wants to ride powerful motorcycles of unlimited category A must now drive a motorcycle of category A limited to 35 kW for at least two years. In the future, direct entry to the higher categories will only be reserved for motorcycle mechanics, police officers and traffic experts.

Parking aids can be used without holding the steering wheel

When using the parking assist system, the driver can release the steering wheel or, if the parking assist allows it, get out of the car. However, you must be prepared to intervene at all times. The driver is responsible for his vehicle at all times.

Paid parking spaces for two-wheelers

Fast electric bicycles (45 km / h), motorcycles and motorcycles can now refer to paid parking spaces.

New signs to use the parking disc.

A new “Reminder to use the parking disc” signage will be introduced at the request of law enforcement authorities in order to eliminate uncertainties about the use of parking spaces marked in white.
