Due to the current situation in the crown, the government is taking action in southwestern Germany. Entry for a short stay is only possible for professional, school or family reasons.
Now is the end of shopping tourism: the German state of Baden-Württemberg has a quarantine requirement for so-called “small border traffic”. Quarantine-free entry for a short stay in Baden-Württemberg is only allowed from December 23, as long as the trip “is not primarily for tourist or shopping reasons.” The state decided Tuesday. The regulation applies to both Swiss entering Germany and Germans returning from Switzerland.
Previously, residents of neighboring Swiss cantons were allowed to enter Baden-Württemberg if the stay in the state did not last more than 24 hours. According to the authorities, this “is still possible with a view to the common living space”, but only if the border is crossed “in particular for professional, school, medical, nursing or family reasons.” Even transnational associations without a marriage license are not affected by Tuesday’s decision.
The aim of the new regulation is mainly to restrict tourism of all kinds. The German state wants to prevent citizens from driving through the Swiss ski areas that are still open. Or to Basel for shopping. Anyone who crosses the border since Wednesday “for this reason alone” has to be quarantined for ten days after returning to Germany. Consequently, what is not allowed to its own citizens is also prohibited to cross-border travelers from Switzerland and France.
The decision was made due to the similar infection situation in Baden-Württemberg and in the border regions. “In view of the extremely tense pandemic situation, border crossings must be temporarily reduced to an absolutely necessary level,” Baden-Württemberg Health Minister Manne Lucha said in explaining the decision. It also appeals to the population not to completely exhaust the existing regulations.
Swiss people still traveling to Germany should not forget the exit restrictions that apply in Baden-Württemberg. The state has been closed since December 16. After 8pm, staying out of your home is only allowed for a few valid reasons. Even during the day, people should only leave the house for a specific reason and with a purpose.
