Startup sentiment was particularly strong in northwestern Switzerland, where startups grew by nine percent. Central Switzerland followed with an increase of seven percent, as well as Zurich and Eastern Switzerland with increases of five and six percent, respectively. Ticino (-16% start-ups) and French-speaking Switzerland (-4%) suffered due to the crisis.

In relation to sectors, online commerce and offers related to the health sector are the ones that have increased the most among emerging companies. 14 percent of newly registered companies are from the retail / consumer goods sector. It is followed by software development and IT with a nine percent share, as well as consulting and law with seven percent.
On the other hand, there were losses in the leisure / travel / sports area. There, the number of startups decreased by 1.3 percent. The division still has 2.8 percent of the startup industry ranking.
The typical company founder was young and male in 2020. One in five founders was between the ages of 28 and 32. 18 percent of the founders were between 33 and 37 years old. 77 percent of the headlines were men, 23 percent women.
GmbH remains the most popular legal form
In 39 percent of cases, new entrepreneurs prefer to establish a limited liability company (GmbH). It was followed by sole proprietorship (32 percent) and public limited company (AG) with 20 percent. An AG had an average starting capital of 120,000 francs, a GmbH with 20,000 francs and a sole proprietorship with 15,000 francs.
The counterpart to record start-ups was the high number of bankruptcies in the past year. There were 2,490 in total, 88 percent more than the previous year. According to the announcement, Blasucci would have expected many more bankruptcies in light of the crown crisis.
Optimistic outlook
He was optimistic for 2021. After the pandemic has subsided, expect a boom in startups. In general, it is assuming a rebound.
Many aspiring entrepreneurs who are active in traditional areas have waited before starting their own business. This is especially true for industries hit hard by the corona pandemic, such as food, events, travel, and entertainment. Low interest rates and advancing digitization are other drivers for startups, especially in the IT, security, construction, and real estate sectors that have been strong for years.
