At high altitudes it was hotter than ever in November. 6.2 degrees were measured at the Jungfraujoch. The limit of zero degrees in the free atmosphere also reached a new record today. The weather balloon probe only reached the frost mark at just over 4,200 meters above sea level.

November 2020 is constantly breaking records. November 2 was already the warmest November day on record in Switzerland in memory. Today (Wednesday) more high altitude records followed. A value of 6.2 degrees was measured at the Jungfraujoch measurement station. On the official record list, the previous maximum of 4.7 degrees from November 6, 1992 is recorded. On November 2, 2020, this value was exceeded at the Jungfraujoch with a measurement of 4.8 degrees. It was also very hot in the other hill stations, but it was not enough for the records.

The weather balloon also recorded a record

The Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology launches a weather balloon in Payerne twice a day. According to the office, today’s noon balloon probe registered a value of +0.2 degrees at 4206 meters above sea level. There has never been such a high value in November.

A return already follows on Sunday.

First of all, now it is done with high temperatures. A cold front caught up with us on Thursday and the snow line in the Jura fell below 1000 meters in the second half of the day, and on Friday night there was also some snow well below 1000 meters in the Alps central and eastern. However, the amount of snow is usually low, in the alpine interior and in the south almost nothing falls. But then it will be hot again, mainly at high altitude. On Sunday +9 degrees are expected again at 2000 meters above sea level. But it’s not as hot as now.
