More and more, faster and more flexible – these are the increasing demands of employees. When resources are no longer sufficient to do the job, stress arises. This is especially increasing among children, as the latest index of job stress shows.
Health Promotion Switzerland uses the Workplace Stress Index to measure how stress levels are changing at work. Unsurprisingly: the speed and intensity of work have been increasing steadily since the start of the measurements in 2014. That alone would not be a problem if the necessary resources were available in the workplace.
If this is not the case, the imbalance between workload and resources increases and stress occurs. Examples of resources in the workplace are motivating working conditions, the holistic nature of the task, or supportive behavior from superiors. The fewer in daily work, the lower the resilience of employees.
Young people often suffer
The current job stress index concludes that, especially for younger employees aged 16-24, resources are often insufficient to cope with increasing work intensity. If the index shows an average stress level of 50.83 on a scale of 0 to 100, it is already 52.18 index points for boys.
About 30 percent of those surveyed already feel exhausted before starting work.
Unbelievable: managers suffer less often from stress. Work intensity and pace are high there as well, but thanks to their position they have far more resources to cope with the increasing workload.
Whether they are managers or simple employees: “In general, about 30 percent of the respondents feel exhausted even before starting work. This emotional exhaustion poses a great risk because it often leads to serious health problems, ”says Achim Elfering, an occupational psychologist at the University of Bern.
Billions in losses due to stress
It is well known that stress is detrimental to health. And when employees are absent due to stress-related illnesses, companies lose profits.
But even when stressed employees work, they incur costs, because the high level of stress reduces performance. According to Health Promotion Switzerland, local companies are losing a potential return of around 7.6 billion Swiss francs annually.
Demand less performance or provide more funds: In this way, in a somewhat simplified way, companies can protect their employees from stress. This is definitely in the best interest of the executive floors.
