Zurich votes for new Hardturm stadium: opponents concede defeat

A clear victory is emerging for fans of the Zurich stadium: after counting all the districts of the city, 59 percent of the voters are in favor of the new building at the Hardturm Stadium or the design plan.

Even districts 4 and 5 of the left-wing city and Höngg voted more than 55 percent for a new stadium at the Hardturmbrache. That is significantly more than in the last vote in 2018. In Höngg, the population voted no the last time.

Thus, in the city of Zurich a clear defeat is emerging for the successful left-wing parties SP, Greens and AL. The parties supported the non-committee.

Lisa Kromer from the stadium opponents’ field acknowledged defeat, as she told the Tages Anzeiger: “We were hoping that our sensitivity to climate and urban planning had matured,” Kromer said. One was never against the stadium, but against the general project. “We fight, we get up.” Kromer did not say whether her group will continue to fight the project.

The fourth ballot of the stadium

This is the second time that people have voted on the “Ensemble” project. The project includes a new 18,000-capacity football stadium in place of the old Hardturm, a cooperative development with 174 affordable apartments, and two 137-meter-high performance-oriented towers with 570 apartments.

At the end of 2018, voters in the city of Zurich said yes to this stadium project for the first time with 53.8 percent. The presentation at the time concerned the construction law and financial relations between the city and private investors.

Then the design plan necessary for the realization was drawn up. Stadium opponents held a referendum against this. They criticized that the project with the two skyscrapers did not fit into the urban landscape and that the extensive sealing of the area was bad for the environment.
