What if children have a cold and when should they have a corona test? The Federal Office of Public Health will answer the most important questions about going to school and child care before the winter season.
Can my child keep going to school if he has a cold and when should I get tested? Until now, there has been uncertainty about the correct procedure, especially in the fall and winter months.. The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) has now adjusted its recommendations for children under the age of twelve.
With mild cold symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat, or mild cough, the child should continue to attend school or care. write the BAG in a message posted on Friday. The prerequisite is that they have not had close contact with a person with Covid-19 symptoms.
The situation is different if he has a fever or a bad cough, even if the child is fine, apart from these symptoms. Then the child has to stay home. They are only allowed to return to school or nursing home if they have not had a fever for 24 hours or if the cough has “improved significantly” in three days. Recommendations in detail:
- If the child has a fever, he should stay home. They are only allowed to return to school or nursing home after they have been fever-free for 24 hours.
- If the fever lasts three days or more, parents should call the pediatrician.
- Even with a strong cough, the child should stay at home. You can only return to school or nursing home if your cough has improved significantly within three days.
- If the cough remains strong for more than three days, a call to the pediatrician is indicated.
- If the child experiences other symptoms, such as gastrointestinal upset, headaches, body aches, loss of sense of smell and / or taste, the procedure should be discussed with the pediatrician.
- If the child has a fever or severe cough and / or is otherwise unwell, the pediatrician should be called to discuss the procedure.
If you come into contact with infected people: stay home
If a child with symptoms of the disease has had close contact with someone with symptoms of Covid-19, they should stay home. If the person tests positive, the child should be tested after consulting the doctor.
If, on the other hand, the person receives a negative test result, that is, does not have a Covid-19 infection, the child can only return to school or care center after they have no longer had a fever for 24 hours or the cough has improved significantly.
The Federal Office justifies the new recommendations with the current state of the investigation. Based on current knowledge, children could be infected with the new type of corona virus. “But children under the age of 12 have fewer symptoms and are less likely to pass the virus to other people.” In addition, the risk of becoming infected at school or in care centers is lower than in the family environment.
