In other regions of Switzerland, too, people have a very high life expectancy compared to other European countries: the Lake Geneva region at 84.2 years was the longest-lived Swiss region after Ticino, followed by Zurich and Central Switzerland with 84 years and the northwest of Switzerland with 83.9 years. In Switzerland as a whole, people had a prospect of 83.8 years of life.
5.5 years longer for women
The average life expectancy in the EU as a whole is 81 years. When it comes to men, Italians have the best prospects for a long life: the autonomous province of Trento leads the ranking with 82.7 years, even ahead of Madrid. In the case of women, on the other hand, Spanish women have the longest life expectancy in Europe: 88.1 years on average in Madrid and 87.3 years in Navarra. Corsica ranks third at 87.2 years. Ticino women are the first Swiss region to rank fifth (87.1 years).
In the 2018 report year, women in Europe got an average 5.5 years more time on earth than men.
Eastern European regions at the bottom of the list
Eurostat calculated a consistently low life expectancy for Eastern Europe: while Madrid residents had an average of 23.2 years longer when they reached retirement age, in Eastern Europe it was only 17 to 18 years, with the Except for Greece, which reached Central European values. The worst place is the Bulgarian region of Severozapaden, where retirees only have an average of 15.7 years of life.
