- The government of the canton of Geneva is massively tightening measures in the fight against the coronavirus and declaring a state of emergency.
- Restaurants and bars have to close. Most stores have to close too, including hair salons and beauty salons. Exceptions apply, for example, to bookstores and florists.
- Unlike the spring, schools and nurseries remain open.
- The measures apply from Monday night at 7:00 p.m. to November 29 inclusive.
Movie theaters, museums, concert halls, gyms, swimming pools and ice rinks are also affected by the closures. Public and private events with more than five people are prohibited, including weddings. Funerals are still allowed for up to 50 people. No more than five people can meet in public or on private occasions.
The Council of State of Geneva justified the step with the number of cases. Every day between 1,000 and 1,300 new cases are reported, reports the Geneva canton doctor Aglaé Tardin. If the number of infections continues to grow as before, the capacity limit of hospitals will be exceeded.
State Councilor Thierry Apothéloz emphasized at the press conference that drastic measures were necessary. But they also want to avoid that Christmas has to be celebrated by videoconferencing.
