The cantons of Zug, Basel-Stadt and Zurich are the most attractive places in Switzerland for companies. The canton of Geneva has almost caught up with Zurich, ranking ten spots on Credit Suisse’s Location Quality Indicator (SQI) this year. At the bottom of the classification are the cantons of Valais and Jura.

Due to the reduction in corporate income tax that came into effect in early 2020, Zug has regained its first place in the cantonal ranking. The canton of central Switzerland had held it since the SQI was first published in 1997, but lost it to Basel-Stadt the year before. His gap with Zug will be small in 2020.

The canton of Zurich and now the canton of Geneva are still somewhat behind, climbing ten places. According to Credit Suisse, these locations have an advantageous combination of attractiveness factors.

The tax argument loses its influence

The cantons of Aargau, Schwyz and Nidwalden also performed well above the average. In the center of the field run by the canton of Lucerne, Basel-Landschaft, Schaffhausen and Solothurn can occupy two places each. With the second most important victory, a total of five places, the canton of Friborg improved closer to the center of the field.

According to Credit Suisse, the most significant changes in the location quality ranking are mainly due to changes in corporate taxes, as was the case last year. This year’s newcomers Geneva and Freiburg have significantly improved their tax appeal for legal persons.

However, since many other cantons also have attractive corporate taxes, the relative advantage of lower corporate taxes has diminished, the bank continues. In the next few years, there will likely be more minor changes to the SQI due to gradual adjustments to corporate taxes in many places.

Therefore, criteria such as the availability of skilled workers and highly skilled employees come to the fore. According to the CS, more than 40 percent of potential employees in urban regions and in the closest agglomeration areas, in the city of Zurich, even 57 percent of potential employees have a diploma from a technical school, university or college.

In rural regions, however, the proportion is less than 25 percent. In these, entrepreneurs must turn to more skilled travelers.

Connection increases appeal

Due to their accessibility by transport, economic metropolitan areas such as Zurich, Zug, Basel, Baden and Geneva and their agglomerations are among the most attractive regions for businesses. In Ticino, the Lugano region and especially Mendrisio offer a higher quality location than their neighboring regions.

The Alpino and Jura arches are less attractive from a business point of view, due to their topography and the considerable travel times to economic centers.
