A NATO helicopter departed for an operation across the Mediterranean off the coast of Greece on Wednesday night. There are six Canadian crew members aboard the CH-148 Cyclone helicopter.
But suddenly it disappears from the radar in international waters between Greece and Italy. NATO is lost at first.
“Search and rescue teams are currently on the move”
Now it is clear: the NATO helicopter sank in the sea near the Greek coast, as reported by Greek public television ERT. The television station also claims that a body has been discovered. This was found with remains near the Greek island of Kefalonia.
This information has not yet been confirmed by military circles. The Canadian armed forces only confirmed the helicopter crash and said: “Search and rescue teams are currently on the move.”
Blocking could cause discussion
As a general rule, Cyclone helicopters have four crew members. These include two pilots, a tactical coordinator, and a radar monitor. In addition, it offers space for several passengers. The Canadian Army has been using it primarily for search and rescue operations since 2018.
In developing the helicopter there were delays and cost overruns. The accident should raise questions about the safety and reliability of the helicopter and spark debate. (sib)
