ZSC finally knocks Ambri out of playoff race: Lugano’s winning streak is torn apart

With three rounds to go, the ten playoff entrants have already been determined. Ambri-Piotta should have won every last game in order to beat the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers. But Ticino lost to the ZSC Lions 2: 4.

ZSC Lions – Ambri 4: 2

The ZSC Lions came out of the home crisis with a 4-2 win over Ambri-Piotta. Zurich dominated the match, but had to fear victory until the end by two goals against in 112 seconds.

Roman Wick scored the goal of the night in the 36th minute. The former striker only scored his first goal of the season on Matchday 4 (or in his 44th game of the season). Wick had never had to plan to score for so long. He set his previous negative personal record 17 years ago when he only scored in game 18 for the first time.

Raphael Prassl secured the victory 4-2 with a power play goal in the 41st minute. Ambri, who should have won, could no longer turn around.

The ZSC Lions hope they have found their way out of the crisis with their first win of the season over Ambri. Of the last eleven games, Zurich had only scored seven points. And only one win resulted from the last nine home games, against the SCL Tigers (5: 2).

Zug – Davos 4: 2

The EV Zug continued to move closer to the all-time record for highest points in the National League. The Zugers won the home game against Davos after a 1: 2 deficit until the 50th minute with 4: 2. Carl Klingberg scored the goals 2: 2 and 4: 2.

Zug’s team equaled HC Davos’ record for the 2011 season (113 points from 50 games) after just 49 games. To avoid arguments over the best mark, the Zugers still need four or seven points at Easter, depending on whether the Easter Monday home game against Biel can still take place late in qualifying.

For Davos, who still compete against the ZSC Lions (h) and Ambri-Piotta (a), it will be extremely difficult to reach the quarter-finals early after this loss.

Lugano – Lausanne 1: 3

HC Lugano loses 1: 3 against Lausanne and has to give Vaudois second place again. It is Lugano’s first loss after eight consecutive victories.

On the penultimate day of March, the Bianconeri had neither the punch nor the cold blood and certainly not the luck that made them the most successful team of the month. Almost symbolic of the decisive 1: 3 in the penultimate minute of the middle third: defender Alessandro Chiesa broke the stick as the last player, Christoph Bertschy did not let himself be called twice and scored his 21st goal of the season.

The Lausanne team won their luck looking much more committed than the boring Ticino. Raphael Herburger’s 1-0 lead was happy, but South Ticino really lost their way with penalties in the middle third. Lausanne was unsuccessful in the power play, but Tim Bozon (27th) and Cody Almond (34th) scored from 0: 1 to 2: 1 shortly after the penalties expired.

In the final third, Lugano didn’t get anywhere near the tipping point. In the very close race for the place of honor behind qualifying winner Zug, Lausanne (new second) and Lugano (fourth) exchanged places.

Freiburg – Langnau 6: 2

HC Friborg-Gottéron maintained their second-place opportunity in the standings with a 6-2 win over the SCL Tigers without question. The game was shaped and decided by Freiburg captain Julien Sprunger. The 35-year-old scored the first three goals for Freiburg in the first 23 minutes.

For Sprunger it was already the ninth hat trick in the National League. A fourth goal, as eight years ago in the 7-3 victory over Ambri-Piotta, Sprunger no longer achieved.

The SCL Tigers were dominated by a wide climate. The Emmentaler stopped the resistance early; In addition, they favored the Freiburg assault with many fines in the second section. Chris DiDomenico, still a cult striker at Langnau a year ago, made it 4-0. Gottéron won all four games against Langnau this season.
