National Councilor Senior Vice President Andreas Glarner (57) wants to use a political initiative to ensure that citizens with dual citizenship can no longer be elected to the federal parliament. The reason for this is his dispute with the Green National Councilor Sibel Arslan (40) on the sidelines of the climate demonstration on the Bundesplatz.
The businessman from Aargau emphasizes to the “SonntagsZeitung” that “the demand is only aimed at ensuring that the people’s representatives in the National Council and the Council of States really only represent the interests of Switzerland and not those of a second country”. He wasn’t targeting Arslan with that. “On the contrary, this new regulation should not apply to former MPs, even in the event of re-election.”
Criticism of Arslan’s advances
This week, however, Glarner posted a Facebook post criticizing Arslan with dual Turkish-Swiss citizenship for campaigning on behalf of foreign interests. He chose those who have a connection to foreign policy.
An excerpt from Arslan’s list of initiatives: “Equality between women and men in the field of climate protection in developing countries”, “The Federal Council must condemn violence against protesters in Sudan” and “Defenders of the human rights in Saudi Arabia need international support. “
Glarner’s comment on this: “Judge for yourself: do you really represent the interests of the Swiss?” By doing so, you are implicitly denying him the ability to represent Swiss citizens in parliament.
In last week’s scandal, he called the colleague from the Basel national council “arschlan” and implied that she was not Swiss. Law and order, Mrs. Arschlan, that didn’t exist in your state! (gf)
