The city on the Rhine is the most popular Swiss city among foreign professionals, according to a survey by the Munich Internations consultancy. Followed by Lausanne, Zurich and Geneva. Valencia, Alicante and Lisbon share the podium worldwide.

Specifically, Basel is ranked 24th out of a total of 66 locations worldwide. It is followed by Lausanne in 28th place, Zurich in 37th place and Geneva in 48th place. This is the result of the “Expat City Ranking 2020” published by Internations on Thursday.

While Lausanne, Zurich and Basel ranked among the top 15 in the world in the quality of life category, Geneva lagged 28th in this category. Furthermore, Geneva is the only one of the cities surveyed in Switzerland that ranks in the top ten worst in the world in terms of finance, housing and cost of living.

Particularly positive: working in the city

However, ultimately, Basel was rated the best city in Switzerland. Basel had the best results in all categories and in particular in the category of works in the city and thus secured the first place among Swiss cities.

Second place Lausanne also scored points in terms of safety and quality of life, while expats living in Zurich complained that it was difficult to make new friends.

In the world ranking, Valencia took first place ahead of Alicante and Lisbon. Metropolises like Rome, Paris, Johannesburg and Hong Kong are also at the bottom of the rankings. The expatriates surveyed rated Salmiya in Kuwait as the worst city in the world.
