According to a new study in Spain, 2.3 million people have contracted the coronavirus. Up to 45,000 deaths are possible.
For weeks, experts have been warning that official statistics from Spain’s crown say little about the actual number of people infected. Now, a nationally representative study carried out by the Spanish Ministry of Health confirmed the suspicion: there are around ten times more people infected in Spain than those registered by official figures. According to the study, around 2.3 million people, about five percent of the population, have contracted the virus in the Kingdom so far. Official statistics from the Spanish crown, however, recorded only 229,540 cases as of Thursday.
For the test, more than 60,000 people from all over the country were screened for antibodies. The research is intended to explore the true extent of the epidemic in the southern European country.
The official statistics of Spain until now had only registered those serious diseases that had to be treated in the hospital. Patients with mild symptoms, as is the case in most patients, were not evaluated and, therefore, were not counted.
Not even all the sick doctors were able to get tested.
The background is that Spain’s health system suffered for weeks from having only comparatively low testing capacity. This led to the fact that even sick doctors and nurses could not be systematically tested in hospitals and nursing homes. That is why hospitals and homes in Spain have become dangerous sources of infection. 20 percent of officially registered patients are members of the health system.
Madrid and Barcelona seriously affected
In the Madrid metropolitan area, the worst point in the crown of Spain, the investigation found that more than 11 percent of the population was infected. In the Spanish metropolis north of Barcelona, the second largest crown access point in Spain, there is seven percent.
According to information published by the Spanish media, around 18,000 residents with crown symptoms have died in Spain’s nursing homes alone in recent weeks. The total number of deaths due to Corona could increase to 45,000 in Spain. This would make Spain the European country with the most pandemic victims.
