- The Basel pharmaceutical company Roche is planning a third tower on the Rhine.
- With a maximum of 220 meters, this should be even higher than the previous two towers.
- In 2023, the old buildings on the Kleinbasel site will be demolished and replaced by the new tower.
The two impressive Roche Towers already shape Basel’s cityscape. Tower number 2 is still under construction, but it already towers over its younger brother. A third tower will now follow, as Roche announced today. Until now, the idea was to build three smaller high-rise buildings there.
It’s still a vision, as site manager Jürg Erismann highlighted at a press conference. However, the visualizations are already available. You can see that the third building should look similar to the first two towers. Basel architects Herzog & de Meuron would also be responsible for the design.
The plans are a compromise with Basel and Switzerland, Erismann said at the press conference. He also emphasized that Roche continues to rely on office work despite Corona and that this can only be partially replaced by home office. “We are firmly convinced that innovation arises above all in personal exchange. That is why we will provide very attractive office workplaces in the heart of the city. “
In parallel with the construction of new buildings, Roche wants to improve the Rhine area and make part of the new green space accessible to the population. Today, only a narrow path between the Rhine and the Roche area is passable for pedestrians and cyclists; Roche now wants to change this.
When Roche begins construction, the new tower is still open. Roche plans to start demolishing existing and old buildings in the so-called southern zone in 2023.
