In recent days the number of people hospitalized has increased. Older generations are also affected more again.
Today, there are as many corona patients in Zurich hospitals as there were five months ago. At the beginning of May, the number of people hospitalized passed the 50 mark for the last time. This value was recorded again this week. On Monday, 51 Zurich residents were dependent on hospital care, 7 had to be ventilated. That comes from the statistics of the cantonal health department.
The number of affected has grown again in recent days. While it was 24 on Thursday, it has more than doubled in less than a week. The canton is still far from the peak of early April, when more than 200 patients were in hospitals and 60 people had to be ventilated at times. But the summer, during which only a handful of hospital beds were occupied by Covid 19 patients, is finally over.
The development of the affected age groups is surprising. Towards the end of the first wave, fewer and fewer older people were infected with the coronavirus. From mid-May to mid-June, the numbers tended to zero. Last week, the canton of Zurich registered a total of almost 160 newly infected people who are 60 years or older.
In a video message on Tuesday, the Zurich city council called on the population to take development seriously. “Continue to implement the known rules and implement them even more consistently,” said Mayor Corine Mauch. This is the only way to avoid the need for drastic measures again to protect people who are particularly at risk of contracting the virus.
A problem in Switzerland
The canton of Zurich is no exception. The number of diseases with a severe course has increased more rapidly in Switzerland for a few weeks, as shown by the statistics platform “Covid-19 Information Switzerland”, based on information from the cantons. However, the level is well below that of early April.
A total of 334 people are currently in the hospital due to corona disease. 36 of them are in the intensive care unit, 18 patients are ventilated. For comparison: two weeks ago 195 people were hospitalized, 22 were in intensive care and 15 were being treated at ventilation stations.
The most serious cases are found in large agglomerations. In addition to Zurich, which recorded 46 people hospitalized on Tuesday, Geneva (63) and Bern (44) currently have the majority of Covid 19 patients in hospital treatment. It is followed by the cantons of Vaud (35), St. Gallen (20), Friborg and Neuchâtel (13 each), Valais and Aargau (12), as well as Ticino and Lucerne with 11 people each.
According to Corona-Data’s count, a total of 2,100 people have died in Switzerland as a result of Covid-19. If the acute phase of spring wears off, the numbers are at a much lower level. But they are also on the rise again: 148 Covid deaths have been counted in Switzerland since June 1. The cantons of Vaud (25 deaths since June 1), Geneva (22), Freiburg and Zurich were the most affected with 19 deaths each.
Contact tracing is reaching its limits
The increase in hospital treatments is directly related to the increasing number of new infections. On Tuesday, the Federal Office of Public Health recorded 1,445 positive corona tests in 24 hours. The canton of Zurich even had a new record on Saturday with 271 new infections. Even last April, the numbers have never been higher.
Therefore, the canton contact location team is under increasing pressure. According to the guidelines of the Zurich governing council, those responsible had pointed to about 100 infections per day. This threshold has been exceeded a long time ago.
Canton Zurich doctor Christiane Meier told the media on Monday that the “super ideal crawl” sought in the summer was no longer possible in view of the increasing numbers. In order to reach as many contact persons as possible, the infected will now be asked to help establish contact.
