Lots of snow in the south, some snow in the lowlands, very soft before Christmas and a cool finish.
December 2020 had many highlights to offer. We are only making a few points here.
Exciting phenomena in December 2020
After nearly 10 days of permanent gray on the plains in late November, the sun finally reappeared in early December. However, with the exception of St. Gallen, December was still a month with less sunshine than the long-term average. Especially in the west and south, the sun was very rare compared to the long-term average.
Record rainfall in Val Müstair
On December 4, heavy rainfall began in the south with snow up to Locarno. In Samedan, 81 cm of fresh snow fell in 2 days, there has never been so much in two days since measurements began in 1980. In general, December 2020 goes down in the annals in the south as a very humid month. At Sta. Maria it even broke a new December record with around 120mm of precipitation. So far, at 98mm in 1979, it was the wettest December there.
Quiet time for a long time.
Then the December weather stayed pretty dull and gray for a long time. Some snow fell and the sun was rarely seen in the lowlands. But it was pretty sunny above the fog.
Then shortly before Christmas, when (almost) everyone was expecting a white Christmas, the proverbial Christmas thaw came along, and a white Christmas seemed unlikely. But just on Christmas Day, a temperature drop here and there brought at least a few flakes to deeper levels. However, in Bern, for example, no snow was reported on any of the three days of Christmas during the official measurement at 7 am In many places it only turned white above 500 or 600 meters.

Next storm foehn
After the north of foehn in the south, the weather changed rapidly after Christmas. The pressure sank in the north in a short time and there was a foehn storm in the south of up to 117 km / h in the foehn valleys.
Snow in the south and bad weather
At the end of December, the winter in Ticino accelerated again and put a load of snow on the lakes. And just before the end of the year, the cold air compressed the layer of weather above us more than rarely.
As almost always, smoother than the norm.
In the context of climate change, it is not surprising that December 2020 was also warmer than the long-term average. Although it was cooler than normal in the latter days of the year, the entire month on average on the northern side of the Alps at the lower elevations was 0.5 to almost 1.5 degrees warmer than the norm. Temperatures in the Alps remained slightly below average.
