Modern Vaccine in the US: Had it in January

The Moderna company’s vaccine was already proven safe in May 2020. A report in “New York Magazine” looks at why it didn’t hit the market sooner.

Modern mRNA-1273 vaccine is one of the most effective vaccines against Covid-19. It should be 94.5 percent effective. According to New York Magazine, it has been around for almost a year.

The vaccine was designed on January 13, 2020, according to the report. That was two days after the DNA sequence was known. Soon after, the researchers learned how the virus was structured. The vaccine was ready before China even publicly acknowledged that the virus was human-borne. In May, the Phase I study showed the basic safety of the vaccine.

Could the vaccine have been used more quickly? The author of the article does not want to affirm that, he writes. Market introduction was not possible due to vaccination infrastructure. The production and distribution of a vaccine generates significant costs and bureaucracy.

Moderna would have risked the reputation

On the other hand, introducing it too early would have unnecessarily put Moderna’s credibility at risk, according to the author. Many Americans would be wary of the new vaccines. And in May, it would have been difficult to find a recognized epidemiologist, vaccine researcher, or public health official to recommend a rapid introduction of the vaccine.

For future generations, one may be the most tragic and ironic feature of Covid-19. That is, a vaccine was available throughout the “brutal” duration of the pandemic, thus the conclusion of the contribution.
