Sforza performance, artificial turf and Corona despite: FC Basel wants to take the 3rd cup in the 4th year to the Rhine.
At the press conference leading up to the Cup final, Basel coach Marcel Koller made it known that he had recently upset some things within the club. Regarding the upcoming final against YB in Bern on Sunday, he specifically criticized the presentation of the new coach on Thursday.
Cases of crown, artificial turf and poor YB balance
Koller should be positive about the return of Samuele Campo. The playmaker spent the last days in quarantine after spending the holidays with Arthur Cabral, Eric Ramires and Eray Cömert who tested positive. The sick trio is still missing from the FCB, Campo is allowed to join again because he returned from vacation 2 days earlier.
Lastly, the form fits even without the quartet. Against Winterthur in the Cup semi-final, Basler showed little effort and won confidently (6: 1). YB, however, had a hard time in qualifying for the Champions League against Klaksvik (3: 1).
“I don’t know if you can read the form of these two games,” says Koller, “YB is always very strong at home, especially on artificial grass.” This is also shown by a glance at the archive: FCB’s last victory in Bern against YB was on May 22, 2016.
Signs similar to 2019
Last year, Red-Blue managed to make up for the lost championship title by winning the cup. Also in the spotlight back then: the question of coaching (despite an ongoing contract).
This has now been cleared up, even if it caused discord in the run-up to the finale. Koller will now try one more time and one last time to prepare his team perfectly for an important match. He could brave the riots one last time at the Cup and probably get some satisfaction for himself.
