Miserable outcome: Basel district president threatened with removal from office
The current president of the Basel district, Elisabeth Ackermann (Greens), faces an uncertain future: once the postal votes have been counted, it is questionable whether she will be re-elected.
In the election to the seven-member government, Ackermann ranks ninth and clearly loses the absolute majority. Stephanie Eymann of the Liberals is not only about to enter government, but she is also ahead of Ackermann in separate elections for the regional council. However, no one on the regional council should achieve an absolute majority on the first vote.
GLP candidate Esther Keller is also ahead of Ackermann for government in the first vote. However, it doesn’t even believe the absolute anymore. On the regional council, however, Keller is clearly behind both competitors. Election to government is a prerequisite for election to regional council.
Surprisingly, Ackermann would not be eliminated after just four years. The district president responsible for cantonal and urban development, as well as culture, is perceived as the weakest link in the majority of the red-green government.
Ackermann’s attempt to resolve a leadership crisis at the Historical Museum had recently drawn him a sharp reprimand from the Grand Council’s Board of Directors. Unlike other cantons, the Basel-Stadt regional council does not fill up every year. Rather, it is designed as a long-term presidium. (viw / sda)
