The corona pandemic is causing a boom in Migros’ online business. In this sales channel, CEO Fabrice Zumbrunnen expects record sales, and is already on “Black Friday” with logistical challenges.

In light of the corona pandemic, Migros is bracing for continued high demand in online businesses. Record sales can be expected on this sales channel, Migros boss Fabrice Zumbrunnen said in an interview with CH Media newspapers.

Logistics is a great challenge. Next Friday’s “Black Friday” will be a first test. The retail group is well prepared for this. The group works closely with the publication, Zumbrunnen said.

It is not yet clear how the important Christmas business will go. From today’s perspective, I would say that 2020 will be a good year for Migros. But it would look even better without the corona pandemic. Overall, the positive effects of the crisis in the crown almost outweighed the negative effects.

Migros has created hundreds of new jobs in the current year, especially in e-commerce. This trend will continue in 2021. At the same time, many employees still have a part-time job. Unfortunately, many jobs are gone. With 90,000 employees, Migros is the largest employer in Switzerland.

A wave of layoffs is not planned

A wave of layoffs is not expected. Migros is a stable and reliable employer, even in times of crisis. The group is investing and creating new jobs in promising areas. In addition, the wholesaler tries to deploy employees of companies with falling sales in growing business areas.

The trend towards home offices is clearly recognizable and is having an impact on retail. It goes in the direction of small formats. People from the head office shop nearby. Smaller stores also benefited from this. Zumbrunnen assumes that work at the head office will continue in part even after the crown crisis.
