Rolling tanks, a waving flag and the Socar logo in the foreground: Azerbaijan’s state oil company, which operates nearly 200 gas stations in Switzerland, is making war propaganda on social media. Oil workers fought for the mother country, the company writes on Facebook. Be proud of your colleagues up front and envy them. Followed by the hashtag: “Karabakh is Azerbaijan”.
The war between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh region broke out again in late September. It was the fiercest fight in almost 30 years. Hundreds of people died and tens of thousands were displaced.
“Migros does business with a warmonger!”
The Socars war propaganda also puts Migros in a bad position. Because the Swiss retailer has a business relationship with Socar. The Azerbaijani state group has been a Migros franchise partner since 2012 and operates the Migrolino stores at the service stations.
For the CVP’s national advisor, Stefan Müller-Altermatt (44), a Migros partner openly makes war propaganda. “Migros is doing business with a warmonger!” “If I buy a chocolate bar at the Migrolino, part of the money goes to this war. That should not be. “Migros must react now. This is the time that Müller-Altermatt boycotted the oil company:” Definitely not refueling in Socar.
Migros is ready to talk
The Solothurn politician is a member of the Swiss-Armenian Parliamentary Group and is in contact with Armenians in Switzerland. As for the criticisms of Migros, he is also linked to the other side, as he underlines: For example, Müller-Altermatt delivered one of the two access credentials to the Federal Palace that parliamentarians can deliver to the Migros lobbyist.
Müller-Altermatt therefore wants to mediate. He organized a meeting between the Armenian diaspora in Switzerland and Migros. It should take place next week.
Migros confirms the contact. In response to the criticisms expressed, the company simply claims that it is closely monitoring the current situation in the Caucasus. “Of course, Migros only enters into contracts that take into account national and international laws,” says Migros spokesman Marcel Schlatter.
Also Uefa in criticism
Due to Socar’s war rhetoric, not only Migros is in the line of fire. The Azerbaijani oil company is also a sponsor of the European football association Uefa. This is also being criticized now.
