At Birsfelden BL, whitefish and perch will soon be farmed on a large scale. The Migros Micarna subsidiary opened a modern fish factory yesterday. 240 tonnes of perch and whitefish will be raised per year at the aquaculture facilities.
Micarna wants to offer more and more traditional locally produced fish. And thus conserve national and international wild populations.
No antibiotics are needed
“Since the fish come from our own farming, we can guarantee the health of the animals. In this way, the use of antibiotics can be completely avoided, ”promises company director Albert Baumann.
The fry come from a farm in Kirschau (D), 800 kilometers away, and are then raised for three to four months in Birsfelden until they reach their ideal weight. 200 grams of perch, 300 grams of white fish.
Twelve basins with fresh water
The system consists of three independent circulation systems, each with twelve basins. “Each cycle is built autonomously and receives fresh water regularly,” says Baumann. (pbe)
