The images of the inauguration of Donald Trump (74) are still present for many: US President Barack Obama (59) and First Lady Michelle (56) hand over the White House to Donald and Melania Trump (50) in a festive ceremony in 2017. Michelle Obama shows nothing, but is furious
On Instagram, the former first lady now reveals how she felt back then. “None of this was easy for me,” Obama writes. What bothered her the most was the unfounded rumor Trump spread about her husband: Barack Obama was not a US citizen. Trump even asked for Obama’s birth certificate.
“Donald Trump had spread racist lies about my husband that put my family at risk,” writes Michelle Obama. “It was not something he was willing to forgive.”
“I was hurt and disappointed”
At the time, Michelle Obama’s hope that Hillary Clinton (73) would participate in the race was correspondingly high. The former first lady was deeply affected by her defeat: “I was hurt and disappointed,” Obama writes. “But the votes were counted and Trump won.”
However, he did what was asked of him. “I knew that, for the good of our country, I had to find the strength and maturity to put my anger aside,” Obama writes. That’s why he invited Melania Trump to the White House and talked to her about parenting and security issues.
He wanted to allow the new presidential couple “a respectful and seamless change of power,” writes Obama, “one of the trademarks of American democracy.” A similar invitation from Melania Trump to Joe Biden’s wife, Jill, is still a long way off.
An ego can’t be that big
Donald and Melania Trump seem to have a different understanding of democracy. Donald Trump is still trying to stay in power and vehemently denies the election of Joe Biden as the new president.
Former First Lady Obama also says: “Our democracy is much bigger than anyone’s ego,” she writes. Obama encourages all Americans to “appreciate the electoral process and do your part to promote a smooth transition of power.” As incumbent presidents have always done throughout history. (hac)
