Mattea Meyer and Cédric Wermuth have been chosen to head the SP party. At the party congress on Saturday, the SP delegates voted with a large majority in favor of the dual Meyer-Wermuth presidency.

The result of the elections was very clear: the new duo of the presidium with Meyer and Wermuth, with a marked left political aspect, received 538 of the 561 valid votes.

Unsurprisingly, 26-year-old rival Martin Schwab of Nidau BE didn’t stand a chance. He received only 23 votes.

The election should have taken place in April

Born in Basel in 1987, Co-President and National Councilor Meyer described herself in her pre-election speech as a “left with a clear position.” She draws the motivation for her political commitment from the hope of working with other activists to create a desired future with social security, equality, climate protection and human dignity.

National Councilor Wermuth declared that the democratic socialism he represented was not magic, but defended a society in which everyone worked together and in solidarity to guarantee a full and good life. He said that it is not those who defend change who consider themselves radical, but people who defend real inhuman conditions.

Levrat’s succession should have been sealed in April, but the project was postponed until October due to the coronavirus crisis. At first, the SP wanted to hold its party conference in Basel in real life, but decided on Thursday to go online in light of the rising number of coronavirus infections.

Unanimous slogan of the SP’s yes to the corporate responsibility initiative

There were no surprises in the virtual congress of the SP party when the slogans for the November 29 vote were drawn up. In the digital vote, delegates voted unanimously in favor of the corporate responsibility initiative and a large majority in favor of the war settlements initiative.

The popular initiative “By responsible companies – to protect people and the environment” (corporate responsibility initiative) was described as “a matter of course”, which was also seen by the delegates. The slogan yes was approved unanimously on Saturday with 349 yeses.

There were only 4 votes against and 4 abstentions for the slogan of the popular initiative “For the prohibition of financing the producers of war material” (war business initiative). Here 324 delegates voted for the motto yes.

And the third item on the agenda was the motion of the management to support the referendum against the new Terrorism Law (police measures to combat terrorism). With 322 votes in favor (with 3 against and 7 abstentions) the necessary majority of two thirds was achieved.
