At first only a shed burned, then the harbor. The flames destroyed much of the port of Ancona on Tuesday. Including trucks with solvents and warehouses with buckets of paint and other toxic materials. And not only that: there is a company on site that produces liquid nitrogen, a power plant and a methane plant.
Witnesses report several explosions. Soon after, a huge plume of smoke rose into the sky. The feathers fell on the Italian city on the Adriatic coast. Authorities responded immediately. Residents should not go outside. The windows remain closed. Schools, universities and public facilities were immediately closed, Italian media reported.
Rescuers are still fighting the fire. The fire is under control. Civil protection is on site. It is currently being determined if the smoke columns are toxic. Apparently no one was injured.
Port of Beirut destroyed
Images from Italy recall the mega fire in Beirut. More than a month ago, a fire broke out in the port of the Lebanese capital. More than 190 people were killed and more than 6,000 injured in the August 4 explosion. Much of the port and its surroundings were completely destroyed. The explosion is said to have been triggered by large amounts of the highly explosive chemical ammonium nitrate that had been stored in the port for years.
Soon after, in early September, it burned again. A tank with oil and tires caught fire. The army used helicopters that threw water from the air over the scene of the fire. The army asked people to leave the surrounding neighborhoods. Eyewitnesses said nearby people fled in panic. A video on social media showed workers leaving the port. (jmh / SDA)
