What a comeback for Mauro Caviezel: the Graubünden native won the Super-G in Val d’Isère just six months after his left Achilles tendon ruptured. It is the first World Cup victory in his career.
After ten podium positions so far, Mauro Caviezel finally claimed his first World Cup victory. The 32-year-old from Graubünden won the Super-G at the opening of the speed season in Val d’Isère. He was one tenth away from the Norwegian Adrian Sejersted. The third was for the Austrian Christian Walder, who lost 0.54 seconds to the winner.
What makes Mauro Caviezel’s triumph even more special: After a left Achilles tendon rupture that was only suffered in June, last year’s Super-G winner took part in his first race of the season. The second best Swiss in difficult conditions at the French ski resort was Beat Feuz (0.91 seconds behind). In 13th place, Marco Odermatt lost a good second to his victorious partner.
On Sunday, the first winter descent of the 2020/21 World Cup will take place in Val d’Isère, also on the Oreiller-Killy track.
