- At least 150 people are missing in northern India after a flash flood and at least three people have died.
- A huge glacier had previously broken off a mountain and fell into a river.
- The accident happened in the area around Joshimath in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand.
According to SN Pradhan, President of Civil Protection of India, a bridge was razed and a power station was damaged. The entire glacier is moving downstream, so low-lying villages have already been warned and an evacuation has begun, Pradhan continues.
“We found at least three bodies in the river bed,” a spokesman for the Uttarakhand state police told AFP. There were also 16 or 17 people trapped in a tunnel, in the meantime they have been released.
According to information from India, between 125 and 150 people are currently missing. Levels in the Rishiganga and Alakananda rivers continue to rise, said Indian Interior Minister Amit Shah. Indian and local civil protection teams, as well as members of the border police and the army, were heading to the affected area.
“India supports the people of Uttarakhand and the nation prays for the safety of all in this region,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Twitter.
