Keeping an overview of all the mask rules in Switzerland isn’t exactly easy. All cantons issue their own rules. Particularly when it comes to the requirement for masks in stores and restaurants, the regulations differ widely.
In the last two weeks, more and more cantons have been using mask rules in stores. Anyone who moves daily in several cantons would do well to obtain complete information in advance.
Only in public transport, for rallies and in flight operations is there a solution for the whole of Switzerland. In these areas, a mask is required everywhere. However, Switzerland does not have a general rule of masks in public spaces. People under the age of twelve or people who cannot wear masks for health reasons are exempt from the mask rules.

Aargau schools issue their own rules
The canton of Aargau does not have to wear a mask in education. However, individual schools may issue their own mask rules. For example, the Wettingen canton school must wear a mask for three weeks, after nine cases of corona in different classes. Aargau has yet to issue a mandatory mask to buy in stores.
Appenzell schools equip themselves with masks
In Appenzell Ausserrhoden and Innerrhoden there are no mask requirements anywhere except on public transport. However, the cantons recommend that schools equip themselves with a basic set of masks.
Nor are measures envisaged at the national level for the two semi-cantons in the future, because the number of cases is comparatively low.
Protesters wear masks in Basel-Landschaft
In the canton of Baselland you have to wear masks at rallies and demonstrations. You can post in stores without a mask.
In principle, there is no mask requirement in schools. The school management stipulates the maximum occupancy, if it is exceeded, masks must be worn.
At Basel-Stadt, the rules will remain in effect until the end of the year
In the canton of Basel-Stadt, masks are mandatory in stores and shopping centers. Also, employees of so-called catering companies must wear a mask. These include bars, clubs, discos, and dance halls.
There is no general requirement for a mask in school, but students and teachers must wear a mask on school premises and in music lessons in elementary schools, vocational high schools, and technical high schools. Mask requirements exist until at least the end of the year.
Registration requirement in the canton of Bern
There is no mask requirement in Bern restaurants, only a registration requirement. Otherwise there are no mask rules, except of course on public transport.
In Bern schools, everyone wears masks if they cannot keep a distance of 1.5 meters. In general, however, the canton waives any mask requirements.
Protection glass in the canton of Friborg
In shops and businesses, both customers and employees must wear a mask. An exception occurs when personnel are protected by a pane of glass. So the staff don’t have to wear a mask.
In restaurants, bars, clubs or other catering establishments in the Canton of Friborg, only employees are required to wear a mask. There is no mask requirement in the education sector.
With mask at the exit of the canton of Geneva
In Geneva you have to wear a mask in bars and restaurants unless you sit down to eat or drink something. Staff should always wear a mask. This also applies to staff in cafes and discos. Even in stores and malls, guests must wear a mask.
Wearing a mask is mandatory in Geneva if the minimum distance of 1.5 meters cannot be maintained.
Isolated masks in the canton of Glarus
There are no mask requirements in Glarus. Protective masks should be worn occasionally when necessary only in schools.
Graubünden remains the same
The canton of Graubünden has no special mask requirements other than mandatory public transport.
Jura is satisfied so far
In the Jura you need a mask in all stores and shops. If personnel are protected by Plexiglass, they do not need to wear a mask. This applies until at least September 6. So far, the canton has been very satisfied with its implementation.
There are no mask requirements in restaurants, bars, clubs and schools.
No mask required for Canton of Lucerne
Lucerne only recommends wearing a mask in schools if you can’t keep your distance. Otherwise, free way! Except in public transport, here only with a mask.
Care in closed rooms in Neuchâtel
The canton of Neuchâtel requires a mask in stores. He also recommends wearing the mask in closed public places. There are no mask requirements in schools and restaurants.
No requirements in Nidwalden and Obwalden
In the half cantons of Obwalden and Nidwalden the mask is not required.
St. Gallen follows the federal government
When it comes to the mask requirement, the Canton of St. Gallen only addresses federal measures and does not go beyond them. Anyone getting off the public transportation system can put the mask away with confidence.
Many exceptions in the canton of Schaffhausen
In Schaffhausen no one has to wear a mask in the shops. In schools in the post-compulsory sector, students and teachers must wear a mask inside. Exceptions apply to: front lesson teachers, cafeteria meals, PE, and guard walls.
Masks on the school grounds in Canton Schwyz
In Canton Schwyz, the mask requirement applies outside of normal lessons. That means a mask is needed on school grounds and in hallways. Otherwise, there are no special rules for masks at Schwyz.
Mask in the shops of the canton of Solothurn
Starting September 3, you will be wearing a mask when shopping at Solothurn stores. Kiosks, weekly markets and service shops are not included.
Everyone in the school wears a mask that cannot maintain a distance of 1.5 meters. You also don’t need a mask in sports or music classes.
Only teachers wear masks in Ticino
In the canton of Ticino, restaurant and bar employees are required to wear a mask. When a Plexiglass is placed between the employee and the customer, a mask is no longer necessary.
Only teachers should wear a mask in Ticino. Not in class, but in the hallways and in the staff room.
Optional masks in Thurgau
In Thurgau educational institutions, schools can optionally use mask requirements. No mask is required in any other area.
No mask requirement on Uri
The Uri requirements do not go beyond the national requirements of the federal government.
Mask in Vaud according to the number of people.
In Vaud, you wear a mask in shops if there are more than 10 people in it.
In addition, in all schools a mask should be worn as soon as the distance of 1.5 meters is not maintained. In grammar schools and adult schools, it is mandatory to wear a mask in the hallways.
Rule of the mask on the banks of Valais
The Valais also decided to require a mask in all stores. Personnel are exempt if protected by a glass panel. In Valais, the mask requirement also applies on banks and in the closed area of train stations. Hotels and restaurants are not affected by this rule.
High school and vocational school students are required to wear masks during class and on site. Teachers must wear a mask everywhere except in the classroom.
ETH Zurich is also adapting
In Zurich, masks are a must in shops and shopping centers. This also includes the closed weekly markets. It lasts until at least September 30.
A mask must be worn in school from the upper secondary level as soon as one moves out of the lesson. A mask is also required for group work or special situations such as laboratory work. In some cases, the mask requirements also apply at ETH, the University of Zurich and the Zurich University of the Arts.
Mask in the cosmetic studio in Zug
In Zug, each school decides where and when to wear a mask, depending on the situation.
Zug also requires a mask for all services involving body contact. This applies, for example, to hair salons or tattoo studios.
