Around 40 politicians have signed a letter from the Niederbipp community to the governments of the cantons of Bern and Solothurn. You are supporting the Niederbipp community’s request to support the maintenance of the Kimberly-Clark paper mill. About two weeks ago it emerged that the paper mill was going to be sold and that all 265 employees could lose their jobs.
“This decision not only hits Niederbipp hard, but the entire region,” said the letter to the governments of the two cantons. The community wants to send the letter on Monday.
“Not only permanent employees are affected, but also temporary employees,” continues the community. Other areas are suppliers, the affiliated logistics company, trade, tax losses and unemployment insurance ”. For these reasons, the governing boards are called to “do everything possible to secure the Niederbipp site and jobs in the long term,” the letter concludes.
Political pressure should secure the location
We are grateful for the support of regional policy representatives, says Niederbipp Mayor Sibylle Schönmann. “Many signed up without hesitation and we received a lot of positive feedback,” he says.
With the help of Fabian Gloor, Mayor of Oensingen and the CVP cantonal council, he appealed to the politicians of the Solothurn canton for support. “He is 100 percent behind it because it is also very important to his community.”
In conversation, he is optimistic that something can be achieved with the letter to governments: “We believe that political pressure plays an important role. For example, the cantons could ensure that potential buyers get favorable starting conditions, ”says Schönmann. The Niederbipp paper mill is still open at the moment. If it does not find a buyer, it will close its doors at the end of 2021.
