In Rome and other cities, emergency services with flashing lights moved to popular spots over the weekend to disperse crowds of people at night. People happily gathered, wine and beer in hand. In the south, near Palermo and Naples, sun worshipers were drawn to the beaches. Thousands flocked to downtown shopping streets on Saturday. The Mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi, warned on Twitter that everyone had to wear a mask: “We must not forget that the emergency is not over yet.”
Many Italians had waited for weeks for the possibility that the weather and the rules of the Crown would make the aperitivo on the street more beautiful. Last Monday, the government relaxed virus restrictions in many regions due to falling infection numbers. Large parts of the Mediterranean country are classified as yellow risk zones with moderate restrictions. For example, in the Lazio region with Rome and in Lombardy, where many things were closed for a long time, bars and restaurants can serve guests at tables again until 6 p.m. After that, bars can sell food and drinks to go for several hours. The nightly curfew begins at 10 pm in all parts of Italy.
Although the sun hid behind clouds in many parts of the country on Sunday, temperatures often stayed in the double digits. In Palermo in Sicily, which still belongs to the orange zone with stricter crown rules, up to 24 degrees were announced.
Experts from the Health Ministry warned on Friday of a deterioration in the corona figures in the country of 60 million people. Infection values are currently higher than in Germany. Major outbreaks and mutations of the virus caused concern in Umbria. Italy has so far registered more than 91,000 deaths per crown.
