The pandemic keeps the United States firmly in check, and the number of infections is breaking all records. President Trump doesn’t seem to care. Successor Biden has to watch.
When the first corona wave hit the US in April, the reported number of new infections each day was around 30,000. This value was probably too low, because at the time there was not enough evidence to reliably measure the actual spread of the virus. In July, when the second wave passed through the United States, this problem was solved. During this time, around 66,000 new infections were diagnosed daily, more than double the number three months earlier.
Now the third crown wave has the country under control and the numbers are breaking all records. The infection rate is increasing exponentially again, currently about 150,000 people in the United States are infected with the virus every day, five times more than in the spring. There are already a total of eleven million people infected in the United States, more than three percent of the population. If the infection rate remains that high, another million people become infected each week.
