Kids Love: Snacks like M & Ms, snickers, or peanuts. But that is exactly what is forbidden from now on at the Blatten school in Männedorf ZH! Even Santa Claus is no longer allowed to distribute nuts. The reason: A boy who started school this year has a severe peanut allergy.
Even the smallest airborne peanut particles or traces of them on door handles can trigger “anaphylactic shock” in children, a life-threatening reaction of the cardiovascular system. “Peanut allergies are among the most serious food allergies and should be taken seriously,” school president Wolfgang Annighöfer tells the “Zürcher Oberländer”.
I have no complaints so far
Parents of affected elementary school students were informed of this in a letter. All the people who are in the school premises can no longer eat peanuts or corresponding products there. Anyone consuming them at home should wash their hands well before returning to school.
The measures are strict, but so far apparently everyone can live with them. So far, neither the president of the school nor the general management of the school have received complaints.
One percent of the affected population
For the school president, however, it is clear that traces of peanuts in buildings can never be completely ruled out. But: “We just do what is possible,” he says.
In addition, the teachers received precise instructions on how to proceed in the event of a severe allergic reaction. According to the Männedorfer school physician, peanut allergy occurs in about one percent of people in the Western world; in Asia it is even less common. (support)
