Mandatory vaccination for Brazil: the main judges take President Bolsonaro to the white heat
Anyone who refuses to get vaccinated is threatened with buses, or even a ban on using public transport or visiting restaurants.
Brazil’s chief judges have made the corona vaccination mandatory for the population, thereby drawing the ire of President Jair Bolsonaro. Almost unanimously, the “Supreme Federal Court” decided this Thursday that the authorities can impose sanctions on those who refuse to be immunized. Sanctions ranged from fines to being banned from renewing his passport or using public transportation, the court said. Also, local authorities can deny access to restaurants or shopping centers if they cannot test a vaccine.
Brazil is one of the most affected countries in the world, with 7.1 million confirmed cases of Covid-19. 184,000 Brazilians have already died. On Wednesday, the Latin American country registered a peak with more than 70,000 new infections. Crown curves have recently increased in many states.
Bolsonaro wants to reject vaccination
Despite these figures, right-wing leader Jair Bolsonaro has always downplayed the pandemic and recently declared it over. Consequently, he massively criticized the Supreme Court’s decision.
“We are not in Venezuela or in Cuba here. I can’t force my people to get vaccinated. ”
That’s why he was angry in a video on social media. Bolsonaro had previously assured that he would not be vaccinated. He had already been infected with Corona in the summer.
Brazil, a nation of 200 million people, has signed a contract with vaccine maker AstraZeneca and expects to receive 37.7 million doses of vaccines by February. The Minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuello, assured that 31 million more doses should be delivered in March. He also stated that his country has a strict vaccination schedule, which is further away than many other industrialized countries. “We are among the vanguards in immunization worldwide.”
