Man in Northeast Afghanistan beheaded his own sister
In northeast Afghanistan, a man decapitated his own sister.
The young woman sought refuge at a police station over the weekend after escaping from her home with her boyfriend, a police spokesman in Badakhshan province said on Tuesday.
The young couple wanted to get married, but would have been afraid of the family’s reaction. The young man came from a poorer family and would not have seen any chance of getting married.
Her brother picked her up from the guard two days later and, according to police, assured her that nothing would happen to her. The following night, however, he killed her and fled to an area of Taliban Islamist militants.
The provincial government made serious complaints to the police and announced that it would investigate the case, according to the head of the provincial council, Abdullah Nadschi Nasari, the German press agency. The friend was under police protection because he was threatened by the young woman’s family.
“She ran away to marry the man she loved,” women’s rights activist Fausia Kufi wrote on Twitter on Monday. Running away alone is not a crime.
In traditional areas, according to human rights activists, many women are still under strict family control. When young, single couples leave the family without permission to live a self-determined life, this is often considered a “moral crime”.
According to a report from the United Nations Convention on Women in March, women are still murdered in Afghanistan with the alleged goal of restoring family honor. Often these alleged murders go unreported. The perpetrators often went unpunished. (sda / dpa)
