Basel councilors demand gender-equal talk time and thus stab a hornet’s nest

Are the men of the Grand Council of Basel taking time away from women?
Yes, think of the two councilors Tonja Zürcher (BastA!) And Michela Seggiani (SP). In a lawsuit to the council office, the two criticized their male conversational colleagues, who took up 80 percent of their talk time in a specially conducted talk-time measurement. Seggiani and Zürcher write in their letter that this is not because men speak more often, but simply because they speak longer.
“We noticed that many men speak for a long time in meetings. Women do this less. At least that was our impression, ”says Michela Seggiani. However, since they couldn’t just tell without evidence, they took their own action. Here is: “Our first impression has been confirmed.”
Now Seggiani and Zürcher want to know more precisely: in their suit to the council office, they demand precise measurements of speaking time and how it is divided between men and women. The council office should also examine “what steps can be taken to achieve gender equitable proportions in speaking requests and speaking time.”
With their advancement, Seggiani and Zürcher hope to raise awareness among the Grand Council. “Maybe someday it will happen that men are told to keep things shorter,” says Seggiani. Many men would not take women’s vows seriously and then say the exact same thing again. “That delays the functioning of the council.”
She sees the reason for male quackery in the socialization of women and men: “Men often look to the big scenes to communicate. Women prefer to do this in their close social environment. ”
“Unspeakable Chabis”
Not all male advisers were enthusiastic about Seggiani and Zürcher’s letter. For example, the former president of the SVP Grand Council, Joël Thüring, wrote on Twitter about “gender absurdity” and “gender chabis”. Grand Councilor SVP Pascal Messerli also doesn’t think much of the idea and fears that the rights of members of parliament could be restricted.
It won’t get that far for now. At the moment, the Council Office only has to report if there is any way to measure speaking time.
